International Women’s Day has been celebrated worldwide for 110 years and has been officially recognized by the United Nations for more than 45 years. This year, in light of the Covid-19 pandemic, gatherings and celebrations are going virtual.
Social media campaigns are driving awareness through the “Choose to Challenge” theme, encouraging all people to call out gender bias against women when they see it. Using hashtags #choosetochallenge and #IWD2021, the call to action advocates for accelerating women’s equality around the globe, according to the International Women’s Day website https://www.internationalwomensday.com.
In addition to going virtual in 2021, this year’s theme takes on a new focus – driving charitable donations to organizations that work to lift up women and advocate for greater social, economic and political equality.
