Position: Part-time Shelter Advocate – variable shifts

Accountability: reports to the manager of shelter services
Hours: approximately 20-25 hours per week, including variable day, evening, weekends, holidays, and potentially overnight shifts

Summary/Objective
The Shelter Advocate promotes the mission and models the values of Anna Marie’s Alliance by providing direct support to residents.

Minimum Education & Experience Requirements
• Four-year degree in a human services field (social work, psychology, sociology) or two years relevant work experience.
• Fully operational vehicle, valid driver’s license, and current car insurance.

Other Requirements
• Experience working with persons living with chronic mental illness and/or chemical dependency issues.

Essential Functions
1. Provides advocacy and support on women’s behalf; this includes assistance in acquiring housing, financial assistance, and employment.
2. Responds to crisis situations on telephone and within the shelter promptly, and provides resource information and referrals to women in our facility.
3. Maintains shelter security at all times. Gains a clear understanding of the shelter security system.
4. Welcomes new residents and assists in identifying immediate needs during intake process.
5. Meets with residents to help sets goals, which must include housing.
6. Assists women in identifying their strengths and in exploring solutions to barriers through the provision of information on local resources and assistance with personal skill-building.
7. Conscientiously communicates information between shifts through logging and shift change activities.
8. Maintains client confidentiality and follows safety policies.
9. Assists women in identifying problems and exploring solutions to those problems.
10. Keeps accurate records of statistics and gives to executive assistant daily.
11. Follows Anna Marie’s Alliance’s policies, protocols, and procedures.
12. Works effectively with persons who have diverse styles, abilities, motivations, and backgrounds
13. Arrive to work promptly and regularly.
14. Assists in housekeeping chores.
15. Participates in check-in meetings on a quarterly basis, and in other meetings, as requested.
16. Performs other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands
This position requires the ability to sit, stand, walk, and occasionally lift up to 30-35 lbs. This position is responsible for doing occasional light housekeeping such as sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, dishes, packing, and other household chores. Will use office equipment, including computer and telephone? Must be able to stay awake and alert during all work hours.

Travel
This position requires occasional travel in the local area. Out of the area and overnight travel is rarely required.
