Internship FAQ

Q: What internship positions are available?

A: We have a number of internship positions at Anna Marie’s:

  • Victim-Survivors Advocate
  • Child/Youth Advocate
  • Criminal Justice Intervention Advocate
  • Communications and Development
  • Human Resources

Q: How many hours a week are needed for your internships?

A: Eight-week internships require a minimum of 20 hours per week (150 hours total).
15-week internships are 30 hours per week (450 hours total) and are usually preferred.

Q: Does Anna Marie’s Alliance require interns to go through a background check?

A: Due to the sensitive nature of our work and the importance of ensuring the safety of our residents, a background check is required for all volunteers and interns. Anna Marie’s Alliance covers all costs of screenings.

Q: Is there a dress code?

A: For youth advocate interns, casual clothing is suitable. For all other positions, business casual attire is most appropriate.

Q: Are there evening and/or weekend shifts available during an internship?

A: For internships in women’s advocacy, evening and weekend shifts are available. For youth advocates, evening shifts are available; weekends are not. Criminal justice intervention, communication and development, and human resources internships are daytime, Monday-Friday only.

Q: Will I be safe working at the shelter?

A: Safety and security are top priorities at Anna Marie’s Emergency Shelter. We have security cameras, an extensive alarm system, secured entrances, and a fully trained staff available to assist you at all times.

Q: What is the process to become an intern at Anna Marie’s Alliance?

A: The first step is to fill out and submit an internship application (available below). Please include a copy of your current resume, a list of references (include at least one work reference; please do not include relatives), and list two goals or objectives for your internship.

After your application has been reviewed, we will set up an interview, during which we’ll ask you to fill out a few forms. Once approved, you’ll be ready to complete our online agency orientation before beginning to work with residents and staff.

Training

Students complete on-line training prior to the beginning of the internship. If this is not possible, the student will complete this training some time during the internship. Guided on-the-job training will be provided for all interns.

Evaluation

Performance evaluation will be according to intern’s course requirements and the goal plan developed with the Volunteer Coordinator and the Program Supervisor.
